Heads for recessing, turning and threading
For transfer machines built for multiple operations, with maximum flexibility of use and machining precision.
NTS — single-slide recessing heads, 1:2:1 ratio
NTS heads are tooling able to perform shaping, threading and other internal operations. They are mounted on flexible fixed-spindle transfer machines, in which the operating unit, besides recessing, turning and threading, also performs shaping.
The radial movement of the slide is obtained by connecting the drive of the operating unit to the centre of the head; the slide, on which the tool is mounted, is moved by a rack mechanism on an inclined plane. The head is fastened by a flange matched to the type of machine in use. The tool is fixed to the head by a standard or special tool holder. On the slide, besides the fixing holes, there are two reference dowel holes to locate the correct position.
NTS heads are actuated by a central draw bar. Actuation varies with spindle speed, tool weight and stroke length; NTS heads are lubricated automatically by an oiler: lubrication is fed through the central draw bar. Surfaces are treated for a low friction coefficient and a long service life. Manual lubrication is also possible, when no centralised system is available, through the oilers on the body. Lubrication must take place at preset intervals, in adequate quantity to ensure the necessary rigidity, and must be forced to allow the draw bar to pass. Actuation can be hydraulic with cylinder or electromechanical with CNC axis. Safety latches are used only with very low draw-bar force.

Values transcribed from the table on page 2 of the brochure (NTS series). Note: for NTS 125 — 26.5° the brochure gives 14 / 28.0 on page 2 against 12 / 24.0 on page 1 (-E series): both values appear in the original.
Stroke/speed and draw-bar force diagrams
Approximate theoretical data, calculated with:
Rotation speed is theoretical and may vary depending on the machine, the working conditions and the application, on tool weight and on how accurately the tools are balanced.
Purely indicative data: the force varies considerably with rpm, tool weight and position. The force generated by the machining operation must also be taken into account.
Lubrication
The hourly volume of lubricating oil and the frequency with which the head is lubricated can vary widely depending on the application: for example rpm, stroke, severity of the machining, etc. The values in the diagram refer to applications on transfer machines, where the heads run at very high output.
An ISO VG 68 slideway oil is normally used (average viscosity at 40 °C = 68 mm²/s). For the heaviest machining, Mobil EPO04 lubricant can be used.
Purely indicative technical data, from the official brochure (the same diagram appears on both page 1 and page 2).
NTS 125-E — twin-slide recessing heads, 1:2:1 ratio
NTS 125-E twin-slide heads are tooling able to perform shaping, threading and other operations on two tools at the same time and are used on centre-rotating transfer machines. The radial movement of the two slides is obtained by connecting the drive of the operating unit to the central draw bar of the head.
The two slides, to which the tools are fixed, are moved by a rack mechanism on an inclined plane: when the central plane is pulled, the two slides close; when the right-hand side of the head is pulled, they open. The head is fastened to the machine by a flange matched to the type of machine in use. The tool is fixed to the head by a standard or special tool holder. On the slide, besides the fixing holes, there is a reference dowel hole to locate the correct position; the same applies to both slides.
Twin-slide heads are recommended for medium-high rotation speeds, which vary with the size of the head itself.
